Reading Review: Part C

Here are some great resources that I found relating to my topic of inquiry based teaching/learning and helping kids use the internet safely while doing their research.

Galileo Educational Network

While searching for interesting information regarding inquiry based learning this Galileo website came up. This is a fantastic site that I had completely forgotten about but was so happy to rediscover. I had the good fortune of attending Galileo network workshops when I taught for the Calgary Board of Education. We met monthly and worked with a network of teachers to plan, share and reflect on inquiry based learning. Once I moved to my next school they had a different way of planning and teaching and this was pushed to the back of my mind. On this site they have valuable information on inquiry based learning, including how to design and plan, and some real classroom examples to look at. There is also a section called Designing Deep Mathematical Understanding which I just discovered today. I have been wondering about teaching math through inquiry so this was a great discovery.

Word Inquiry

This is a youtube video link showing a word inquiry lesson led by Pete Bowers. Pete Bowers is the founder of WordWorks Literacy Centre in Ontario and began and tested an instructional approach called 'structured word inquiry'. This is a practice that supports all strands of language arts. It helps children learn about the structure of words through inquiry which helps them develop a deeper understanding that they then can apply to reading and writing. Children learn through their own questions rather than just memorizing spelling patterns. I learned about and used this approach in my last school with our head of literacy who worked closely with Pete and learned this inquiry method herself. I wasn't aware that Pete had a youtube channel so I started checking out quite a few of his videos and was excited that I could see some more example of word inquiry in action. In this video he is introducing the concept of word sums to Kindergarten children. The interesting part to me was that he is in Canada and this class is in China where he is teaching them via Skype. This would be amazing to do in the library with a class, teach them about word inquiry, have them come up with their own questions and even have an expert join an exploration using technology. I find word inquiry very inspiring and I look forward to thinking more about how this could become part of a library culture.

Research Toolkit Database from the Greater Victoria School district library website.

In this database you can find many different websites that children can use to do research and inquiry. This is the first I had heard of one of the sites in this database called 'Kiddle', a safe visual search engine for kids. They can use it just like google but see images along the side and you know it is filtered for child-friendly content.

Wonderopolis is a unique website that promotes exploration, imagination, laughs, creativity and learning. Each day they pose a wonder of the day but there is also a space where children can write wonders of their own.

That is only two of the many sites on this database but it is easy for children to access from the school computers and filled with lots of valuable websites.

Safe share - safe ad-free you tube watching

My fear with kids using youtube is that something inappropriate will come up and I will be responsible for the repercussions of that. One thing that can happen when you are showing children a youtube video during a lesson is other unwanted videos appear on the side or advertisements. This site allows you to copy and paste a youtube link and watch the video with no other ads or videos around it. When it's over the vide stops rather than playing another youtube video.

  1. Thank you for finding and sharing that Safe Share resource. Brilliant! I always have my youtube video ready to go paused at the point when the commercial just stops so my students don't have to watch the commercial, but this is so much better! I have had a kids dance moves video for kindies going only to be interrupted by a less than appropriate commercial.

  2. Well done final vetted, selected and annotated list of resources for you to reference, refer and discuss in many projects moving forward. Your collection of relevant, local, supportive and useful resources using many different formats will support your ongoing inquiry and conversations with colleagues around these topic. A good final bibliography and nice use of embedded tools and media. A great summation of your finds.
